Today marks the start of GLAD International Film Festival, an annual event that aims to promote the values of tolerance regarding sex, race or social status.

The festival is supported by many sponsors including the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Consulate General of France in Thessaloniki and the French Institute, as well as a number of media organisations like antivrusmagazine and T-Zine. Sympraxi – Partnership for Gender Issues organises GLAD (gay, lesbian, asymmetric, diverse) International Film Festival, the oldest LGBT festival in Greece; this year is the 22nd edition, with the first having taken place in 1999. Since then, GLAD has screened countless films and documentaries from all over the world. This year’s edition will host films from Iran, Pakistan, Brazil and Taiwan, to name a few outside of Europe and the United States.

Typically, the film festival takes place at the port of Thessaloniki but needless to say, GLAD Film Festival is another one of many events affected by covid-19. Initially intended to have taken place in September, the festival organisers chose to postpone the event. Before restrictions on public gatherings, GLAD Film Festival also included discussions with film directors, art exhibitions, and parties.

Covid regulations have dragged on however, and GLAD Film Festival has decided to proceed online. They will stream 30 documentaries and movies on gladfest.eu until the 14th of January, with the cost of a movie being 3 euros, while short movies are given for free.
