Have a look on your dressing this week to identify what is missing, because from the 11th to the 13th of October, the Thrift Festival is arriving with a set of new outfits !
Last year, more than 100,000 people gathered at the Thessaloniki Port in three days to find new items, have a good time and meet people with same values. More than a open thrift store, the festival has the aim to raise awareness about sustainable fashion and consumerism by involving local artisans, vintage sellers, eco-friendly brands and discussions on the impact of fast fashion. At the same time, this event features live music and food stalls, to ensure people they will have a full and pleasant experience during this edition of the Thrift Festival !
The Festival sums up a rising behaviour: buying clothes that have been recovered and reconditioned after being sold and worn to someone else.

Plenty reasons are highlighted by customers met in these shops. Firstly, economical, two Polish students in holidays in Thessaloniki argued: “maximum we will put five euro for one item, and for an entire basket, maybe twenty”. Thrift stores are cheaper compared to brands shop, which leads to selective behavior about price. Related to this phenomenon: the average age of the consumer of thrift stores, mostly in between seventeen and thirty years old, people who may have smaller incomes than the +30yo category. Customers from thrift stores will expect low prices, regardless to the state of the clothing.
The second reason shown by customers is the need to find different clothes “I want to find some pieces, more vintage or things that no one will have around me”. This desire to stand out from the crowd is encouraged by thrift stores in the way that they offer many clothes from different styles and eras. We observed that young people, when they visit a new place, always stop over in thrift stores, linked to the idea of finding new clothes and new styles in places they are exploring.
Then the Thessaloniki thrift festival will become the place to be for these following days.
