Food poverty today affects millions of people in France. Faced with this major challenge, non-profit organisations play a crucial role in providing concrete and immediate solutions. Whether it is food collections, meal distributions or recycling of unsold goods, these solidarity actors act on a daily basis to reduce inequalities and guarantee sustainable access to sufficient and balanced food. This article explores the initiatives carried out by these associations, as well as the challenges they encounter in their fight against food poverty.

Food poverty remains a significant problem, where many people struggle to access sufficient and balanced food. In France, it particularly concerns students, single-parent families, the homeless, and even retired individuals. The cost of living often prevents access to a balanced diet. In addition to this, food waste deprives the system of a significant quantity of resources that can be used to help the most deprived.

Faced with this emergency, associations play a decisive role in supporting the most deprived and fighting for a more equitable world.

As a volunteer at the Food Bank for several years, I have directly witnessed the impact of these actions. Every year, I participated in the national collection which takes place on the last weekend of November, during which we collect food, basic necessities (hygiene and newborns products), which are later redistributed to nearly 2.4 million people experiencing food poverty, supported through more than 6,000 associations. It is essential since it allows the association to collect the equivalent of 20 million meals in three days and cover 10% of its supply needs.

During the year, the association collects surplus food from supermarkets, producers and donors, sorts it, then redistributes it via aid centers or local partners.

Associations like the Food Bank do not just distribute food. They also raise awareness about food waste and work in partnership with companies to amplify their impact.

Faced with growing inflation, the lack of resources is forcing teams (volunteers and employees) to increase their efforts. For two years, in the Var department (south of France), the Food Bank has had to set up a second collection, in addition to the national collection, to compensate for the increase in needs and the drop in donations. Indeed, citizens facing economic difficulties themselves are reducing their contribution, while the number of people in precarious situations continues to increase.

Beyond emergency aid, it is crucial to think about sustainable solutions to eradicate food insecurity in France. This involves better distribution of resources, the fight against waste, and educational actions to promote a balanced and affordable diet for all.

To conclude, the actions carried out by associations in the face of food poverty are crucial to providing immediate and lasting assistance to the most disadvantaged. However, the challenges, notably increasing needs and decreasing resources, require a stronger commitment from everyone. It is more necessary than ever to support these initiatives and promote solidarity to build a more just and inclusive society. My volunteer experience changed me. It allowed me to better understand the social and economic realities linked to food poverty, to understand the extent of the needs, and above all to value the human bonds that are created in this collective fight. It is with this perspective that I will continue my participation as a volunteer, convinced that each gesture contributes to a more united and civil society.

Every citizen can also play a role in this fight. Participating in food collection, reducing your own waste or supporting associations through financial or supply donations are all concrete actions. Raising awareness around you about the issue of food poverty also helps to keep this subject at the center of social issues.
