"IN MEDIA RESC" volunteering team at the JobFestival

On November 14th, the Volunteering team “IN MEDIA RESC” participated in Thessaloniki’s Job Festival, organized by “Skywalker”, an employment agency dedicated to connecting candidates with employers from various industries. In the fully packed Vellideio Conference Center, 105 companies from the fields of tourism, technology, engineering, commerce, food, marketing, human resources management, customer service, and beauty came together for a vibrant and inspiring event, seeking new team members for a wide range of positions.

Our volunteers engaged in an enjoyable yet constructive activity: they asked employers from all different sectors the questions every job seeker wishes they could, to uncover what truly makes a candidate shine… or slip to the bottom of the list.

  • The first question was what message or advice they would give to young candidates —and employers were surprisingly aligned in their answers: to research the company before applying, chase opportunities they’re truly passionate about, network as much as they can, and make sure their résumé is impossible to ignore.
  • As for the top three skills employers look for in young candidates, soft skills clearly dominate. Communication abilities, flexibility, adaptability, open-mindedness, and a strong willingness to learn were the recurring themes across all responses.
  • And when it came to the skills young people often lack, employers highlighted consistency, computer literacy skills, foreign language knowledge and a strong work ethic. They also pointed out that many candidates have unrealistic expectations and are reluctant to start from the bottom and work their way to the top.
  • Last but not least, when asked about the most common mistakes young applicants make when applying for a job, it is that they do not read the job description, they do not have a professional résumé and their email address is not appropriate, while the photo on their résumé is often too personal.

The responses collected by our volunteers show that the job market is evolving, seeking creative and open-minded young professionals, and valuing soft skills more than ever! At United Societies of Balkans, which also participated in the parallel activities of the Job Festival, we provide young people with opportunities to develop these skills and strengthen their CVs through European Solidarity Corps and Erasmus+ programs across Europe, skill-building workshops, and a wide range of educational initiatives.
