Leftover Lovers in the City

Waking up beside Arnold, my black and white cat
with the sheet being tossed in the corner, almost touching the wooden floor
almost… but not quite
like I was almost grasping the idea of spending another day of my precious holidays
in my claustrophobic apartment, but not quite
I enjoyed the unearthly silence just for it to be broken by Arnold’s meowing
an indication that his bowl was as empty as the city
a city that usually buzzes like a hive, today it felt
heavenly and disturbingly quiet
like I was transported to a parallel universe
where I was the only human left
with Arnold to keep me company
-if he still wanted me as his spare human-

A laugh pulled me out of my daydream and my gaze followed the sound
my eyes met two young people teasing each other
touching and hugging, kissing each other
like they were the only humans left in this world.
In a sense, they were
alone in this city, free from the nosy neighbours
-apart from myself and Arnold- free from responsibilities and the rush of everyday life
in their pink bubble that’s full of love and enthusiasm
filling the apartment with their colourful auras
their smiles and tears
two leftover lovers in the city
