Thessaloniki is the second well-known city of Greece, and hosts every year a lot of tourists. But beside the most classic see sight activities, there are many other interesting things to do in town. And no need for big money!
Here is our suggestions for five affordable and unconventional things to do in the city.
See the sunset from different points of the city
For romantic people but also for Instagram addicted, Thessaloniki can offer some of the most scenographic sunsets. In every season and with every weather, enjoy the magic moment when the sun dives into the sea. You can see it from Nea Paralia, the old port or the White Tower, or climb up to the Kastra and savour the view of the city drifting into the twilight. But you can also discover little known places and find your own magic sunset spot! How many different places are you able to collect?
Party all night long
Thessaloniki is a city that never sleeps. With its universities, social centres, squats, clubs, it hosts many creative people with awesome ideas. That’s why if you are in the mood for partying, it will not be difficult to see the sun rising, with little money and big fun!
Enjoy a day at the beach
Sadly it is not possible to access the sea from the city seafront. But don’t worry, nice beaches are reachable with public transport! You can enjoy the beautiful Epanomi, with its “golden tongue” stretching out in the sea, or reach the closer and more equipped area of Peraia/Nea Epivates. It is also possible to take a boat from the port or from the White Tower and enjoy a little cruise across the bay!
Volunteer in a festival
Thessaloniki boasts cultural activities for every taste. Environment, human rights, art, music, culture… Surely you will find something of your interest. Volunteering in a festival is an amazing way to plunge into the city life. It will help you meet people that share your passions, and be active for a cause that you care about. And don’t be afraid if you don’t speak any Greek yet! Thessaloniki is an international city: other volunteers will help you for sure, and you will learn new words and expressions!
Visit the train cemetery
If you like adventures there is a special place in Thessaloniki where you can feel like an urban explorer! Take a bus and walk a little out of the city and you will find yourself in a post-apocalyptic scene, among old wagon frames and nature taking over the remains.
